Adjectives are words that describe or modify nouns or pronouns. They provide more information about the noun or pronoun, such as how many, what kind, or how much. In this chapter, we will focus on three types of adjectives:
Adjectives of Number,
Adjectives of Quality, and
Adjectives of Quantity.
- Adjectives of Number
Adjectives of number tell us how many or in what order something is. They answer the question “How many?” or “In what order?”
Examples:
– Definite Number: one, two, three, first, second, third, etc.
– Example: She has two cats. (How many cats?)
– Example: He finished in first place. (In what order?)
– Indefinite Number: some, many, few, several, all, etc.
– Example: Many students attended the event. (How many students?)
– Example: Few people know the truth. (How many people?)
Note- Nouns can be countable or uncountable. Books are countable; water is uncountable. An adjective with an uncountable noun is an adjective of quantity. An adjective used with a countable noun is an adjective of number.
Example-
We have sufficient water. (adjective of quantity)
We have sufficient books. (adjective of number)
- Adjectives of Quality
Adjectives of quality describe the kind or quality of a noun. They answer the question “What kind?”
Examples:
– Descriptive Adjectives: beautiful, brave, clever, kind, etc.
– Example: She is a kind woman. (What kind of woman?)
– Example: The brave soldier saved the day. (What kind of soldier?)
- Adjectives of Quantity
Adjectives of quantity tell us how much of something there is. They answer the question “How much?”
Examples:
– Quantifiers: some, much, little, enough, all, etc.
– Example: He has some money. (How much money?)
– Example: There is little water in the glass. (How much water?)
How to Identify Adjectives
- Adjectives of Number: Look for words that tell you “how many” or “in what order.”
– Example: Three apples, second chance.
- Adjectives of Quality: Look for words that describe the nature or quality of the noun.
– Example: Beautiful flower, clever boy.
- Adjectives of Quantity: Look for words that indicate the amount of the noun.
– Example: Some sugar, much effort.
