What is Simple Present Tense?
The simple present tense is used to talk about:
– Actions that happen regularly
– Facts that are always true
– Habits and daily routines
– General statements and opinions
Forming Questions in Simple Present Tense
To form questions in simple present tense, we use helping verbs (do/does) at the beginning of the sentence:
– Use ‘do’ with I, you, we, they
– Use ‘does’ with he, she, it
Basic Formula:
Do/Does + Subject + Main Verb (base form) + Rest of the sentence?
Examples:
- Statement: They play basketball.
Question: Do they play basketball?
- Statement: She reads books.
Question: Does she read books?
Important Rules to Remember:
- When using ‘does’, remove ‘s/es’ from the main verb
– Statement: He watches TV.
Question: Does he watch TV?
- Question words (What, Where, When, Why, How) come before do/does
– What do you like to eat?
– Where does she live?
- With the verb ‘be’ (am/is/are), we don’t use do/does
– Are you happy?
– Is she a doctor?
