What Are Ordinal Numbers?

Ordinal numbers tell us the position or order of things. They tell us what place something or someone is in.

Think about when you:

* Line up to go to lunch

* Run in a race

* Wait for your turn to play

Let’s Learn Our Ordinal Numbers

Here are the first ten ordinal numbers:

1st = First

2nd = Second

3rd = Third

4th = Fourth

5th = Fifth

6th = Sixth

7th = Seventh

8th = Eighth

9th = Ninth

10th = Tenth

Fun Examples from Our Daily Life

In the Classroom:

* Sarah is the first person in line

* Miguel is the second person

* Lisa is the third person

* Tom is the fourth person

In a Race:

* The cheetah finished first

* The horse finished second

* The dog finished third

* The turtle finished fourth

On a Birthday:

* First, we sing “Happy Birthday”

* Second, we blow out the candles

* Third, we cut the cake

* Fourth, we eat the yummy cake!

Fun Activities to Try:

  1. Line up your toys and tell their positions:

   * “My teddy bear is first”

   * “My car is second”

   * “My blocks are third”

  1. When you climb stairs, count them with ordinal numbers:

   * “First step”

   * “Third step”

Remember:

* Ordinal numbers tell us position or order

* They tell us who or what comes first, second, third, and so on

* We see ordinal numbers every day – in lines, races, and games!
