In this chapter, we’re going to learn about some very special words that make our sentences come alive – VERBS! Have you ever watched a dog running in the park, or seen birds flying in the sky? All these actions are described by verbs. Let’s dive in and discover the magical world of action words!
What are Verbs?
Verbs are words that tell us what someone or something does, is, or has. They are the action words in our sentences. Just like superheroes have special powers, verbs have the power to show:
– What people or things do (action verbs)
– How people or things feel (feeling verbs)
– What people or things are (being verbs)
Action Verbs
Think about all the things you do in a day. You wake up, brush your teeth, eat breakfast, run to catch the school bus, write in your notebook, and play with your friends. The words wake, brush, eat, run, write, and play are all action verbs because they show what you’re doing!
Let’s look at some examples:
- The cat chases the mouse.
- Birds fly in the sky.
- Children laugh and play in the park.
- My mother cooks delicious food.
Feeling Verbs
Some verbs tell us how someone feels:
- I love chocolate ice cream.
- She likes to read storybooks.
- They hate getting up early.
- He wants a new bicycle.
Being Verbs
These verbs tell us what something is, was, or will be:
- I am a student.
- The sky is blue.
- They are my friends.
- It was a sunny day.
How to Spot Verbs in a Sentence
Here’s a fun trick to find verbs in sentences! Ask yourself these questions:
- Is it showing an action? (run, jump, sing)
- Is it showing a feeling? (love, hate, want)
- Is it showing a state of being? (am, is, are, was, were)
Remember!
– Verbs are doing words
– They can show actions, feelings, or states of being
– Every complete sentence needs a verb
– One sentence can have more than one verb
