1. Adjectives of Quality
Adjectives of quality (also called descriptive adjectives) tell us about the features, characteristics, or properties of nouns – how something looks, feels, sounds, tastes, or smells.
Examples:
– The clever fox jumped over the fence.
– She wore a beautiful dress to the party.
– The soup was hot and spicy.
– My grandmother bakes delicious cookies.
– The rough surface hurt my feet.
Think of adjectives of quality as words that answer the question “What kind?”
- Adjectives of Quantity
These adjectives tell us how much of something there is, but without giving an exact number. They answer the question “How much?” or “How many?”
Examples:
– I have little time left.
– There is much work to do.
– She ate some cake.
– We don’t have enough paper.
– Many students attended the concert.
Common adjectives of quantity:
– much, many, some, any
– little, few
– enough, plenty
– several, most, all
- Adjectives of Number
Also called Numeral Adjectives, these tell us the exact number or position of something. They answer the question “How many?” or “Which one in order?”
Two main types:
- Cardinal Numbers (show quantity): one, two, three, etc.
- Ordinal Numbers (show position): first, second, third, etc.
Examples:
– Three cats slept on the mat.
– This is my second attempt.
– Twenty students passed the test.
– She lives on the fourth floor.
