What Are Adverbs?

Adverbs are special words that tell us more about actions (verbs), adjectives, or other adverbs. They help us understand how, when, where, or to what extent something happens. Think of adverbs as the words that make our sentences more interesting and detailed!

For example, in the sentence “The rabbit hopped quickly across the garden,” the word “quickly” is an adverb that tells us how the rabbit hopped.

How to Recognize an Adverb

There are several ways to spot an adverb in a sentence:

  1. Many adverbs end in “-ly” (quickly, softly, carefully)
  2. Ask yourself these questions about words in the sentence:
    • How did something happen?
    • When did it happen?
    • Where did it happen?
    • To what extent did it happen?

The answers to these questions often point to adverbs!
