Introduction
Welcome to the wonderful world of number names! Just like you have a name, every number has a special name too. When we write numbers using letters instead of digits, we call them “number names” or “number words.”
Learning number names helps us:
- Read and write numbers in stories and books
- Fill out forms and write checks (when we grow up!)
- Understand math problems better
- Communicate clearly about numbers
Let’s learn how to spell and say numbers from 1 to 99!

| 10 | Ten |
Part 2: Numbers 11 to 19
These numbers are a little special because they don’t follow the regular pattern. You need to memorize them!

| 13 | Thirteen |
| 14 | Fourteen |
| 15 | Fifteen |
| 16 | Sixteen |
| 17 | Seventeen |
| 18 | Eighteen |

Tips and Tricks to Learn Spellings
๐ Trick 1: The “Teen” Family (13-19)
All numbers from 13 to 19 end with “teen”. Just add “teen” to the ones digit!
- Three + teen = Thirteen
- Four + teen = Fourteen
- Watch out! Some change a little: Five becomes Fif-teen, Eight becomes Eigh-teen
๐ Trick 2: The “Ty” Family (20-90)
Numbers that are multiples of 10 end with “ty” (not “tee”!).
- Twenty, Thirty, Forty, Fifty, Sixty, Seventy, Eighty, Ninety
๐ Trick 3: Tricky Spellings to Remember
Some numbers don’t follow patterns. Make up silly sentences to remember them:
- FOUR has a “u” in it โ “U have FOUR fingers on each hand (plus a thumb!)”
- FORTY drops the “u” โ “At FORTY, you’re not U“
- EIGHT has “eigh” โ “EIGHt looks like a figure 8 turned sideways”
- TWELVE โ Think “TWEnty comes after TWElve”
๐ Trick 4: The Hyphen Helper
For numbers 21-99 (except 20, 30, 40, etc.), always use a hyphen (-) between the tens and ones.
- 34 = Thirty**-**four (not “thirty four” or “thirtyfour”)
๐ Trick 5: Say It, Write It, Check It
- Say the number out loud
- Write it down
- Check your spelling with the chart
- Practice 3 times!
๐ Trick 6: Fun Memory Games
- Clap and Spell: Clap for each letter as you spell (F-O-U-R-T-E-E-N)
- Rainbow Writing: Write the same number name in different colors
- Air Writing: Write number names in the air with your finger
- Number Hunt: Find number names in books and magazines
๐ Trick 7: Group Practice
Practice numbers in groups:
- One-digit group: 1-10 (these are building blocks!)
- Teen group: 11-19 (memorize these!)
- Tens group: 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90 (learn the “ty” endings!)
- Combination group: Mix and match for 21-99!
ย
