What Are Times Tables?

Imagine you’re helping your mom set the dinner table. Each person needs one plate. If 3 people are eating, you need 3 plates. But what if each person needs 2 things – a plate AND a cup? Now you need to count: 2 for the first person, 2 more for the second person, and 2 more for the third person. That’s 2 + 2 + 2 = 6 things total!

Times tables are a quick way to add the same number again and again.

Instead of writing 2 + 2 + 2, we can write 3 Γ— 2 = 6

This means “3 groups of 2” or “2 added 3 times.”

Why Do We Need Times Tables?

Times tables help us count faster in everyday life:

  • At the bakery: If one cookie costs 2 rupees, how much do 4 cookies cost?
  • With toys: If each toy car has 4 wheels, how many wheels do 3 cars have?
  • Sharing treats: If you give 5 candies to each of your 2 friends, how many candies do you need?
  • In the garden: If each flower pot needs 3 seeds, how many seeds for 5 pots?

Without times tables, we’d have to add numbers over and over. Times tables make counting groups super fast!

How Are Times Tables Made?

Let’s discover how to build each table using different fun methods!

Method 1: The Addition Ladder πŸͺœ

We climb up by adding the same number each time.

Table of 2 (Counting by 2s)

  • Start with 0
  • Add 2: 0 + 2 = 2
  • Add 2 again: 2 + 2 = 4
  • Add 2 again: 4 + 2 = 6
  • Add 2 again: 6 + 2 = 8
  • Add 2 again: 8 + 2 = 10

So the table of 2 is: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20

Table of 3 (Counting by 3s)

  • 0 β†’ +3 β†’ 3 β†’ +3 β†’ 6 β†’ +3 β†’ 9 β†’ +3 β†’ 12 β†’ +3 β†’ 15

Method 2: The Picture Method 🎨

Draw groups of objects to see the tables!

Table of 4: Counting Wheels on Cars

πŸš— (4 wheels) = 1 Γ— 4 = 4

πŸš—πŸš— (4 + 4 wheels) = 2 Γ— 4 = 8

πŸš—πŸš—πŸš— (4 + 4 + 4 wheels) = 3 Γ— 4 = 12

πŸš—πŸš—πŸš—πŸš— (4 + 4 + 4 + 4 wheels) = 4 Γ— 4 = 16

Table of 5: Counting Fingers on Hands

βœ‹ (5 fingers) = 1 Γ— 5 = 5

βœ‹βœ‹ (5 + 5 fingers) = 2 Γ— 5 = 10

βœ‹βœ‹βœ‹ (5 + 5 + 5 fingers) = 3 Γ— 5 = 15

Method 3: The Number Line Jump 🦘

Imagine a kangaroo hopping on a number line!

Table of 3: Jumps of 3

0 --3--> 3 --3--> 6 --3--> 9 --3--> 12 --3--> 15

Each hop is 3 spaces. Where you land is your answer!

Method 4: The Skip Counting Song 🎡

Make up rhythms and chants!

Table of 2: “Two, four, six, eight, who do we appreciate? Ten, twelve, fourteen more, sixteen, eighteen, twenty – SCORE!”

Table of 5: “Five, ten, fifteen, twenty – counting by fives is plenty! Twenty-five, thirty more, thirty-five, forty – let’s soar! Forty-five, FIFTY – we’re done, counting by fives is so much fun!”
