What is Addition?
Addition means putting things together to find out how many we have in total. When we add, we are combining groups to make a bigger group.
Imagine you have 2 apples in one basket and 3 apples in another basket. When you put all the apples together, you have 5 apples! This is addition.
We use the plus sign (+) to show addition, and the equals sign (=) to show the answer.
2 + 3 = 5
We read this as: “Two plus three equals five.”
Why Do We Need Addition?
Addition helps us solve many problems in our everyday life! Here are some examples:
At the Park: You are playing with 3 toy cars. Your friend gives you 2 more toy cars. Now you want to know: How many toy cars do you have altogether?
At Snack Time: Mom puts 4 cookies on your plate. Then she adds 1 more cookie. How many cookies do you have now?
In the Garden: You see 2 butterflies on one flower and 3 butterflies on another flower. How many butterflies are there in total?
Addition helps us count and find the total every day!
Let’s Learn to Add!
We’re going to learn addition in four fun ways. You can choose the way you like best!
Method 1: Adding with Pictures (Counting Objects)
This is the easiest way to understand addition. Let’s use pictures to count!
Example 1: 2 + 1 = ?
π π + π = π π π
Count all the fish together: 1, 2, 3
So, 2 + 1 = 3
Example 2: 3 + 2 = ?
β β β + β β = β β β β β
Count all the stars: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
So, 3 + 2 = 5
Try It Yourself!
- 4 + 1 = ? (Draw 4 circles, then 1 more circle, and count them all)
- 2 + 3 = ? (Draw 2 hearts, then 3 more hearts, and count them all)
Method 2: Adding Horizontally (In a Line)
When we write addition problems in a line from left to right, we call it horizontal addition.
Example 1: 3 + 4 = ?
Step 1: Start with the first number: 3 Step 2: Add the second number: 4 Step 3: Count forward from 3: “4, 5, 6, 7” Step 4: The answer is 7!
So, 3 + 4 = 7
Example 2: 5 + 2 = ?
Start at 5, then count 2 more: “6, 7”
So, 5 + 2 = 7
Example 3: 1 + 6 = ?
Start at 1, then count 6 more: “2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7”
So, 1 + 6 = 7
Method 3: Adding Vertically (Top to Bottom)
Sometimes we write numbers one below the other. This is called vertical addition.
Example 1:
2
+ 3
---
5
Step 1: Write the first number on top: 2 Step 2: Write the second number below it: 3 Step 3: Add them together: 2 + 3 = 5 Step 4: Write the answer below the line: 5
Example 2:
4
+ 1
---
5
4 + 1 = 5
Example 3:
3
+ 5
---
8
3 + 5 = 8
Vertical addition helps us keep our work neat and organized!
Method 4: Adding on a Number Line
A number line is like a ruler with numbers. We can hop along it to add!
What is a Number Line?
0 β 1 β 2 β 3 β 4 β 5 β 6 β 7 β 8 β 9 β 10
Example 1: 2 + 3 = ?
Step 1: Start at 2 on the number line Step 2: Jump forward 3 spaces (one hop at a time) Step 3: First hop lands on 3, second hop lands on 4, third hop lands on 5 Step 4: You land on 5!
So, 2 + 3 = 5
0 β 1 β 2 β 3 β 4 β 5 β 6 β 7 β 8 β 9 β 10
Example 2: 4 + 2 = ?
Start at 4, jump forward 2 spaces: 5, 6
So, 4 + 2 = 6
0 β 1 β 2 β 3 β 4 β 5 β 6 β 7 β 8 β 9 β 10
The number line is a great tool because you can see addition happening as you move along!
Fun Addition Facts!
Here are some special things about addition:
Adding Zero: When you add 0 to any number, you get the same number!
- 5 + 0 = 5
- 7 + 0 = 7
Order Doesn’t Matter: You can add numbers in any order and get the same answer!
- 2 + 3 = 5
- 3 + 2 = 5 (Same answer!)
Adding 1: When you add 1, you just move to the next number!
- 4 + 1 = 5
- 8 + 1 = 9

Remember!
- Addition means putting things together
- The + sign means “plus” or “add”
- The = sign means “equals” or “is the same as”
- You can add using pictures, horizontally, vertically, or on a number line
- Practice makes perfect!
Keep practicing, and you’ll become an addition superstar! π
