🌟 What is Carryover?

When we add numbers and get 10 or more in any place (ones, tens, or hundreds), we need to carry over the extra to the next place!

Think of it like filling boxes:

  • When a box gets 10 or more items, we move 1 group to the next bigger box!

📘 Topic 1: Adding Three-Digit + One-Digit Numbers

🎯 Example: 345 + 7 = ?

Method 1: Column Addition (Most Popular!)

Step 1: Write numbers Step 2: Add ones place
  one below the other 5 + 7 = 12
                           Write 2, carry 1
     3 4 5 ¹
     + 7 3 4 5
    ----- + 7
                           -----
                               2
Step 3: Add tens place Step 4: Bring down hundreds
  1 + 4 = 5 3 stays as is
     ¹ ¹
   3 4 5 3 4 5
   + 7 + 7
   ----- -----
     5 2 3 5 2

Answer: 345 + 7 = 352

Method 2: Break and Add

Break the problem into smaller steps:

  • Start with 345
  • Add to get to the next ten: 345 + 5 = 350
  • Add the remaining: 350 + 2 = 352

Answer: 352

Method 3: Number Line Jumps

Start at 345 → Jump 7 spaces → Land on 352
    345 -----> 352

Method 4: Place Value Addition

  • 345 = 300 + 40 + 5
  • Add 7 to the ones: 5 + 7 = 12 = 10 + 2
  • Carry the 10 to tens: 40 + 10 = 50
  • Put it together: 300 + 50 + 2 = 352

💡 More Examples:

  1. 528 + 6 = ?

      ¹
    5 2 8
    + 6
    -----
    5 3 4

    8 + 6 = 14 (write 4, carry 1) → 534

  2. 467 + 8 = ?

      ¹
    4 6 7
    + 8
    -----
    4 7 5

    7 + 8 = 15 (write 5, carry 1) → 475

📗 Topic 2: Adding Three-Digit + Two-Digit Numbers

🎯 Example: 456 + 67 = ?

Method 1: Column Addition

Step 1: Write numbers Step 2: Add ones
  properly aligned 6 + 7 = 13
                           Write 3, carry 1
   4 5 6 ¹
   + 6 7 4 5 6
   ----- + 6 7
                            -----
                                3
Step 3: Add tens Step 4: Bring down hundreds
  1 + 5 + 6 = 12 4 stays as is
  Write 2, carry 1

   ¹ ¹ ¹ ¹
   4 5 6 4 5 6
   + 6 7 + 6 7
   ----- -----
     2 3 5 2 3

Answer: 456 + 67 = 523

Method 2: Expanded Form

  • 456 = 400 + 50 + 6
  • 67 = 60 + 7
  • Add ones: 6 + 7 = 13 = 10 + 3
  • Add tens: 50 + 60 + 10 (carried) = 120
  • Add hundreds: 400 + 0 = 400
  • Total: 400 + 120 + 3 = 523

Method 3: Add Tens First, Then Ones

  • Start with 456
  • Add 60: 456 + 60 = 516
  • Add 7: 516 + 7 = 523

Answer: 523

Method 4: Compensation Method

  • Round 67 to 70 (easier to add!)
  • 456 + 70 = 526
  • We added 3 extra, so subtract: 526 – 3 = 523

Answer: 523

💡 More Examples:

  1. 238 + 85 = ?

      ¹ ¹
    2 3 8
    + 8 5
    -----

    8 + 5 = 13, 1 + 3 + 8 = 12 → 323

  2. 674 + 49 = ?

      ¹ ¹
    6 7 4
    + 4 9
    -----
    7 2 3

    4 + 9 = 13, 1 + 7 + 4 = 12 → 723

Method 1: Column Addition

Step 1: Ones place Step 2: Tens place
  8 + 5 = 13 1 + 4 + 7 = 12
  Write 3, carry 1 Write 2, carry 1

     ¹ ¹ ¹
   3 4 8 3 4 8

   ----- -----
       3 2 3
  Step 3: Hundreds place
  1 + 3 + 2 = 6

   ¹ ¹
   3 4 8
  +2 7 5
   -----
   6 2 3

Answer: 348 + 275 = 623

Method 2: Expanded Form

  • 348 = 300 + 40 + 8
  • 275 = 200 + 70 + 5
  • Add ones: 8 + 5 = 13 = 10 + 3
  • Add tens: 40 + 70 + 10 = 120 = 100 + 20
  • Add hundreds: 300 + 200 + 100 = 600
  • Total: 600 + 20 + 3 = 623

Method 3: Add Place by Place

  • Start with 348
  • Add 200: 348 + 200 = 548
  • Add 70: 548 + 70 = 618
  • Add 5: 618 + 5 = 623

Answer: 623

Method 4: Near Hundreds Trick

  • 275 is close to 300
  • 348 + 300 = 648
  • We added 25 extra, so: 648 – 25 = 623

Answer: 623

  +4 2 5
   -----
   8 2 6

Answer: 826

Method 3: Look for Friendly Numbers

Look at the ones: 4 + 7 + 5

  • 4 + 6 = 10 (take 6 from the 7)
  • 10 + 1 + 5 = 16

Look at the tens: 3 + 6 + 2 = 11 (+ carry 1) = 12

Look at hundreds: 2 + 1 + 4 = 7 (+ carry 1) = 8

Answer: 826

Method 4: Round and Adjust

  • 234 stays
  • 167 → 170 (add 3 extra)
  • 425 stays
  • Add: 234 + 170 + 425 = 829
  • Subtract extra: 829 – 3 = 826

💡 More Examples:

  1. 123 + 456 + 289 = ?
      ¹ ¹1 2 34 5 6+2 8 9-----8 6 8

    3 + 6 + 9 = 18, 1 + 2 + 5 + 8 = 16, 1 + 1 + 4 + 2 = 8 → 868

🌈 Tips and Tricks for Addition Masters!

✨ Tip 1: The “Make 10” Trick

Look for numbers that add up to 10!

  • 7 + 3 = 10
  • 6 + 4 = 10
  • 8 + 2 = 10

Example: 347 + 253

  • Ones: 7 + 3 = 10 (easy!)
  • Tens: 4 + 5 = 9 (+ carry 1) = 10 (easy!)
  • Hundreds: 3 + 2 = 5 (+ carry 1) = 6
  • Answer: 600

✨ Tip 2: Round to the Nearest Ten or Hundred

Make numbers easier to work with!

Example: 456 + 98

  • Think: 456 + 100 = 556
  • Subtract the extra 2: 556 – 2 = 554

✨ Tip 3: Always Line Up the Places!

WRONG: RIGHT:
456 4 5 6
+ 78 + 7 8
                 -----

Keep ones under ones!
Keep tens under tens!
Keep hundreds under hundreds!

✨ Tip 4: Check Your Carries!

Write small carry numbers above so you don’t forget them!

 ¹ ¹
 3 6 8
+2 7 5
-----
 6 4 3

✨ Tip 5: Add from Right to Left

Always start with the ones place, then tens, then hundreds!

Like reading, but backwards! ➡️⬅️

✨ Tip 6: Use Your Fingers or Counters

If you’re stuck:

  • Use your fingers
  • Use blocks or counters
  • Draw dots or circles
  • There’s no wrong way to count!

✨ Tip 7: Practice Makes Perfect!

The more you practice, the faster you’ll become at seeing the carries!
