What is Money?

Money is something special that we use to buy things we need and want!

In India, we use:

  • 🪙 Paisa (small amounts)
  • 💵 Rupee (larger amounts)

Just like we count apples, toys, or pencils, we can count money too!

🤔 Why Do We Need Money?

Imagine you want to buy:

  • 🍭 A chocolate
  • 📚 A storybook
  • 🎨 Crayons for drawing
  • 🏀 A ball to play with

We cannot just take these things from shops. We need to give money to the shopkeeper in exchange!

💡 Money helps us:

  1. Buy things we need (food, clothes, books)
  2. Save for things we want later (toys, games)
  3. Share with others who need help

🪙 Indian Coins (Paisa and Rupees)

Let’s learn about the coins we use in India!

Common Coins:

Coin Value Picture
Small copper coin 50 Paisa
Small silver coin ₹1 (One Rupee)
Medium silver coin ₹2 (Two Rupees)
Thick golden coin ₹5 (Five Rupees)
Big silver-gold coin ₹10 (Ten Rupees)

💵 Indian Notes (Rupees)

Notes are paper money! They are colorful and have different sizes.

Common Notes:

Note Color Value
Pink ₹10 (Ten Rupees)
Green ₹20 (Twenty Rupees)
Blue ₹50 (Fifty Rupees)
Purple ₹100 (One Hundred Rupees)
Orange ₹200 (Two Hundred Rupees)
Green ₹500 (Five Hundred Rupees)

✨ Important Rule! ✨

💯 100 Paisa = ₹1 Rupee

This is very important to remember!

Think of it like this:

  • 100 paisa coins together = 1 rupee coin
  • Just like 10 tens make 100, 100 paisa make 1 rupee!

Examples:

  • 50 paisa + 50 paisa = 100 paisa = ₹1
  • 25 paisa + 25 paisa + 25 paisa + 25 paisa = 100 paisa = ₹1

🧮 How to Calculate What We Pay

Method 1: Adding Step by Step

Example: Buy a pencil (₹2), eraser (₹3), and sharpener (₹5)

Step 1: ₹2 + ₹3 = ₹5
Step 2: ₹5 + ₹5 = ₹10
Total = ₹10

Method 2: Using Your Fingers! ✋

Count on your fingers:

  • Start with the biggest number
  • Count up!

Example: ₹5 + ₹3 + ₹2

Start at 5 → add 3 more → (6, 7, 8) → add 2 more → (9, 10) = 10!
