Part 1: Understanding Three-Digit Numbers
What Do the Digits Mean?
Every three-digit number has three parts:
- Hundreds place (left digit) – How many hundreds
- Tens place (middle digit) – How many tens
- Ones place (right digit) – How many ones
Example: The number 347
- 3 is in the hundreds place = 3 hundreds = 300
- 4 is in the tens place = 4 tens = 40
- 7 is in the ones place = 7 ones = 7
So 347 = 300 + 40 + 7
Part 2: Counting from 301 to 400
The Pattern to Remember
When we count from 301 to 400, the hundreds digit stays 3, but the tens and ones digits change just like counting from 1 to 100!

Tips and Tricks for Success! 💡
Tip #1: The Hyphen Helper
When writing numbers in words, use a hyphen (-) for numbers 21-99 in the tens and ones place.
- 327 = three hundred twenty-seven (hyphen!)
- 441 = four hundred forty-one (hyphen!)
- 320 = three hundred twenty (no hyphen for exact tens)
Tip #2: Skip Counting Shortcut
Practice skip counting to learn faster:
- By 10s: 310, 320, 330, 340, 350…
- By 5s: 305, 310, 315, 320, 325…
- By 100s: 300, 400, 500…
Tip #3: The “Teen” Reminder
Numbers 11-19 are special (they’re called “teens”):
- 313 = three hundred thirteen (not “three-teen”)
- 415 = four hundred fifteen (not “five-teen”)
- 319 = three hundred nineteen
Tip #4: Watch for Tricky Spellings
Some words are spelled differently than they sound:
- 40 = forty (NOT “fourty”)
- 50 = fifty (NOT “fivety”)
- So 340 = three hundred forty
- And 450 = four hundred fifty
Tip #5: Zero in the Middle
When there’s a zero in the tens place, skip straight to the ones:
- 305 = three hundred five (not “three hundred zero five”)
- 408 = four hundred eight
- 502 = five hundred two
Tip #6: Practice with Real Objects
Count collections of items to make it real:
- 350 building blocks
- 425 buttons
- 490 paper clips
Remember These Key Points:
- All numbers from 301-399 start with “three hundred”
- All numbers from 401-499 start with “four hundred”
- The last two digits count just like 1 to 99
- Use hyphens for compound numbers (twenty-one, thirty-five, etc.)
- Practice makes perfect! Count a little bit every day
